š„: Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami - MOVIE REVIEW
By: T.K
Bare with me everyone. Iām slowly drifting out of my documentary binge phase. Next week you should have something different than a doc. If not @ me on Twitter or comment below with some movies I should watch and review for ya. āCocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miamiā is a limited documentary series on Netflix about Willy Falcon and Sal Magluta. Two of the most notable drug dealers in the history of the country during the 1980ās in Southern Florida who really like boats and racing them.
Kudos to the Director
It is very hard to keep a person like me entertained with ātalking head documentaries.ā Trust me. Ask my professors. Ask my colleagues. Director Billy Corden (Screwball, The U) knows how to take interesting notes or stories from the people and edit sound bites to help tell the story with cool archive footage from personal film or media coverage. Some parts and most of the episodes were repetitive but it kind of helped the stories that the subjects were telling throughout the series. What I enjoyed the most about this series was we got to hear more about the court proceedings which is interesting because a lot of directors like to glamorize the drug dealers and king pins lifestyle and family but not when shit gets legal and they are guilty for the crimes. For instance, we wouldnāt know that Falcon and Magluta got away with the actual first trial by jury tampering, and physical altercations during the trial. The jury stories are highly interesting. I was definitely intrigued.
Conclusion,
The series was very good. I enjoyed hearing Marilyn Bonachea's side of everything. She was really the key player in their organization. She literally kept the organization going and held it down until she realized the man she loved and his arrogant ways and organization were truly betraying her. Throughout the series, I wish they were able to get some stories or more from Willy Falcon and Sal Magluta, but unfortunately one is in prison and the other was deported back to his country and reportedly kicked out of Cuba and never heard from again? Interesting. Overall, this was a refreshing and great documentary if you just ignore the repetitive parts and the horrible theme song by Miamiās very own latin artist Pitbull.
