📺: “Untold: The Malice at the Palace” - Episode Review

By: T.K

In the success of “30 for 30” and “The Last Dance”, Netflix has premiered a new sports documentary series called “Untold.” It premiered August 10th with the first episode, The Malice at the Palace. If you are not a big basketball or sports fan, “The Malice at the Palace” was the biggest brawl that took place November 19,2004 in Auburn Hills with the Indiana Pacers players and 20,000 Detroit Piston fans. The episode gets the personal accounts of Ron Artest aka Metta World Peace, Stephen Jackson, and Jermaine O’Neal and how they were painted as “thugs” in the NBA after this night.

Shift of Blame...fixed?

I feel like we can all agree and say we want to talk to Jamaal Tinsley after watching the episode. Learning that Tinsley lowkey started the brawl with a few words to Artest and ruined the Pacers chance to get Reggie Miller a ring before he retires makes me upset. Anyways! It was great to see personal accounts from people who work that game that night, and seeing the UNEDITED version of the brawl from different angles of the cameras that were placed in the area that night compared to ESPN’s version of it. My favorite part was when O’Neal said about fans and who they idolize or who they support. How your idol reacts is how your fans are going to react. Yes, it was KIND OF Ron Artest’s fault for starting the brawl physically with fans but it was definitely the fans fault. Like why are you clenching your fans and walking up on the court to punch Artest?

Conclusion,

This was a good episode to start the series off. I wish the episode would talk about the racial coding of how the players were framed because you could tell it was some racial coding that the NBA showed when it came to giving Artest, Jackson, and O’Neal the longest suspensions in NBA history. This episode came out just in time after the latest incident with a fan dowsing Knicks player Immanuel Quickley in beer who was banned from MAdison Square Garden. Like grow the *beep* up. I still can’t believe they interviewed a lowkey clout chaser fan who got his a$$ rock almost twice. Overall, I’m excited to see the next episodes after this one.
