With the cliffhanger of 2019’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” the question was how will Peter deal with his identity being public & what responsibilities will he have to burden? Well “Spider-man: No Way Home” answers that question and many more. This movie is a true love letter to the character and its source material. With each film, actor Tom Holland continues to prove why he is the definitive web-slinger.
For years, the MCU has been criticized for making their Peter Parker a sidekick to Tony Stark; with large sections of fans believing the series has relied too much on the more familiar heroes around him. In No Way Home, Peter does go to see Dr. Strange. But make no mistake, this is a full fledged Spider-Man film. After a spell gone wrong, Strange only appears as a supporting role and Spider-man is left to deal with his villains alone.
The five villains in this movie do a great job of feeling like they fit and belong unlike previous films in the franchise. “Spider-man 3” (2007) & “Amazing Spider-man 2” (2014) couldn’t give their villains enough time to shine, but here we get great screen time with Jaime Foxx’s Electro who gets a wonderful redemption from his time in ASM 2 and William Dafoe as Green Goblin who is just as great if not better than he was in “Spider-man” (2002).
Zendaya as MJ was a very minor character and never felt like a true love interest, but here the chemistry between her and Tom Holland is top-notch, and she is very likable. Same can be said for Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds who’s always been a great best friend to Peter. This is a Spider-man movie that gives you everything you want, nothing more and fans of the films will certainly not be let down.
This movie is very much playing off the nostalgia of previous Spider-man films but it’s for a purpose. With Tom Holland already agreeing to do another trilogy, the door is really opened up for a truly mature and seasoned Spider-man; one that trusts his instincts alone & doesn’t solely rely on his allies.
