đź“ş: Insecure: Pressure, Okay?! - Episode Review
By: T.K
Last week, Lawrence learns that fatherhood may not look like what he imagined. I have to agree with Issa and say this is my favorite episode so far this season.
We start off the episode with where Issa broke up with Lawrence and we follow his life and see what it is like since the break up. Last season, he landed his dream job but it was in San Francisco. Also Candola, who found she was pregnant. I’m still bitter about this pregnancy because why him?! Lol. Anyways, We see Lawrence with a new confidence and a “glow-up” that he didn’t really have in the previous seasons. He’s taking charge of accounts at work and he seems in control of what he wants to do, which has never been the case. While on a date, he finds out, via text, that his baby has been born, and he blurts out the news to the lady he’s with and she takes it as a prank or joke.
TO LA…
When Lawerence arrives at the hospital, Condola is holding their son, Elijah Mustafa, in her arms with her sister played by Keke Palmer and her mother, played by the tremendous Lela Rochon (“Waiting to Exhale,” “Boomerang”), beside her. It becomes clear that Condola’s family has provided most of the support during her pregnancy while Lawrence has been unattached and living his life explains the tension in the hospital room.
One thing for sure, We know Lawerence wants to be in his son’s life but he doesn’t realize or understand what that actually looks like or what he’ll have to give up in order to do it. In a beautiful montage we see the life between Candola who is sleep deprived, breastfeeding and managing her newborn’s schedule, and Lawerence is living in San Francisco, working late and going on dates and flying to Los Angeles once a week to claim fatherhood. The tension finally shows not once but twice. We see at Tiffany and Derek’s party for their daughter where Candola explodes on him for introducing him to solids. The second time, He makes his weekly trip to LA excited to have his son spend the night but Candola changes her mind and they both admit they can’t trust each other.
Overall…
This episode finally illustrates that for all of his professional achievements, Lawrence has remained emotionally stagnant. From his resentment for Condola deciding to have the baby without him as if she conceived on her own and literally tells her. This also calls out Condola’s communication skills to co-parent with someone who wants to be in their baby’s life. Hopefully throughout the season, we continue to see Lawrence and Condola work on their co-parenting. Lawrence makes a decision for his son and maybe letting go of the life that he thinks he should have and learn to embrace the journey in front of him which is fatherhood and maybe moving back to LA.
