đź“ş: Insecure: Growth, Okay?! - Episode Review

By: T.K

Last week we laughed with our girls Molly and Issa about getting robbed by Cheyenne and her dude. We finally got an answer on Lawrence and Issa's relationship. This week, I’m truly convinced Insecure is going big and all out for the final season and I’m truly here for it!

One Year Later…

The episode starts off with a time lapse of Molly and Issa’s lives and BOOM. We get hit with the title card that saids “One Year Later.” ONE YEAR LATER?! Like wow we in the future and still no pandemic being talked about (THANK GOD). We get to see Molly embracing a new haircut which I personally do not think she would cut her hair in my opinion. I see her dying or trying different colors, but I stan. She is flourishing at work in a blue suit. Molly has gotten into her bag and is solely focusing on herself. She’s getting her mind right and even her parents’ affairs in order by nudging them to call an estate planner and sort out their will which I thought was cool to see on tv. Molly’s parents have other things on their minds. They want grandbabies or at least a wedding, and they’re not quiet about it. She even tries a little bit of dating.

Meanwhile Issa is finally seeing real success with her company The Blocc, with the help of her assistant Quoia. They are currently presenting to partner with water brand NBW to sponsor a community fashion show for a formerly incarcerated designer named Crenshawn, played by the finest man ever Kofi Siriboe. His fashion comments on the prison system, and he employs other formerly incarcerated artists. But NBW is a little concerned about spending too much money on an untested artist which we all know it’s a lowkey black and white issue. Issa reassures them that they are not making a mistake. She goes to let Crenshawn know the company is still good but they want to remove some things from the show. Performance artists? Gone. Low riders? Gone. Drummers? Also gone. Crenshawn isn’t pleased, but Issa manages to talk him down off the ledge and maybe going back to jail.

Other Good News…

The good news is that Molly and Issa are back to their old selves and their friendship is back on track. They’ve figured out how to reintegrate themselves into each other’s lives. Molly even spends the night at Issa’s place so frequently that Issa’s that she has bought her own pillow. “If you gon’ keep spending the night, I want you to be comfortable. Also, your head kept deflating mine.” Issa and Nathan are still hanging out as well which makes me happy as hell. #TeamNathan. They’re working together to plan an anniversary event for Nathan’s barbershop and dancing around their obvious attraction to each other.

Day of Show…

Issa is setting up at the California African American Museum (amazing museum btw) . Things are going well until Quoia alerts her that Crenshawn has put all parts they cut from the show back in and didn’t bother to give her a heads up. Issa is pissed because she’s afraid it will endanger The Blocc’s partnership with NBW, but Crenshawn doesn’t want to compromise his vision to answer to a brand and lowkeys calls her a sellout. When the show starts, it’s a brash, beautiful, in-your-face with a political message. Sitting in the front row, the NBW executive Seth looks deeply uncomfortable, and Issa is sure that her career is over, but Molly is by her side being a good friend. Shocking but not really Seth is blown away by Crenshawn’s vision. He thanks her for pushing him out of his comfort zone and says he’d love to be part of future projects with The Blocc. Issa is relieved, but she knows that this is not a  win. Her guilt is written all over her face. She questions if she is a sellout.

After a long night, Issa invites Nathan to come over to her place to hang. When it gets late and he makes a move to leave for the night, Issa invites him to stay the night for ya know. But after they climb into bed and Nathan leans over for a kiss, Issa bursts into tears. He consoles her as she cries, but when she wakes up later in the night, he’s gone. Call it Awkward.

Great episode can’t wait for next weeks episode where we focus on our boy Lawerence!
